UW sailing club a national leader

Which organization boasts of possessing the largest nonmilitary fleet in the nation? The UW Sailing Club, which owns 120 boats and sailboards.

That group is hosting an event that is as large in magnitude as the club is in stature — the Intercollegiate Sailing Association’s national championship, a 10-day affair that kicked off Tuesday on Lake Mendota.

Syttende Mai Stoughton still in the race

The number of registrants for the Syttende Mai Run and Walk has been a little inconsistent over the past few years, but longtime event coordinator Margit Gerber said she’s not going to sweat it. That activity she’ll reserve for the runners on May 15.

“We have always edged the 450 mark for the 20-mile run, but in 2008 we were below 400,” Gerber said. “We aren’t worried about our numbers, but we are looking forward and trying to be brave by adding new events.”

It’s tee time for disc jocks

Mike Batka looked through the window of his retail store on Milwaukee Street to the lush field and steep hillside of Hiestand Park.

Batka does this every few hours to check the weather, monitor the park and to get a head count of the growing number of disc golfers waiting to tee off.

“There are times I’ve looked across the street and found upwards of two dozen people standing around,” Batka said. “Madison has a nice disc golf scene, but it hasn’t seen much growth in its resources, and we’re reaching a point of critical mass.”

A Reel Big Fish Tale

Across the street from the evening’s venue at The Rave in Milwaukee, sits the historical looking Ambassador Hotel on Wisconsin Avenue.  The inlaid marble floors and Art Deco design of the building’s lounge gives an upper class façade, where women sip martinis and the men order scotch. Off in the furthest corner from the street window, the general décor of the bar is thrown off by facial pierces, T-shirts and blue jeans as three members of the Orange County ska band, Reel Big Fish, sit quietly sipping vodka tonics, bloody Maries, and lattes.  Being a little out of place is a scene trombone player Dan Regan says the band is familiar with.
